Deaf Camp at Camp Sertoma

Deaf Camp offers traditional and adventure camp experiences to boys and girls, ages 8 to 16, who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a family member who is deaf or hard of hearing. Counselors consist of hearing as well as deaf and hard of hearing adults. Interpreters are available at all times and often serve dual roles of counselor/interpreter.

Located in the Sauratown Mountains, the facility commonly known as Camp Sertoma is officially the Sertoma 4-H Educational Center. It is owned by North Carolina State University, which administers the Cooperative Extension program of which 4-H is the youth component. Sertoma is included in the name in honor of two Sertoma clubs that donated the property to the University in 1980. Present-day facilities include a lodge, dining hall, gym, swimming pool, and ropes course.

Old Salem Sertoma Club provides scholarship funds to campers. Members serve as volunteers during the week of camp and assist in the maintenance of the facility and grounds throughout the year. One member has served as camp director for three consecutive years, managing staff recruitment and selection, communications with year-round camp staff, program planning, volunteer coordination, and camp supervision.
