Hearing & Speech

Apraxia
Debbie Conner, a speech/language therapist, discussed the symptoms and treatment protocols associated with apraxia, a communicative disorder affecting young children.

Summer Speech Therapy Program
Carolyn Woods, a speech/language therapist, discussed the components and benefits of the Summer Speech Therapy Program. The program provides individualized therapy to Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools students during the summer break and is supported by Old Salem Sertoma Club and other Sertoma Clubs in the Henry C. Carter District.

Wee Talk
Founders of this privately funded preschool discussed the preschool history as well as needs of the school and its students. The purpose of the preschool is to deliver speech development services in collaboration with intense parental involvement in order to mainstream hearing impaired children into regular school settings.

Freedom & Democracy

National Heritage Month Art Competitions (annual)
Sertoma members presented awards to winners of Old Salem Sertoma Club's art competition for area 5th grade students. Themes include: "America: Home of the Brave," "America: Land that I Love," and "Let Freedom Ring."

"Women of History"
Members of the R.J. Reynolds High School drama department presented a dramatic performance.

North Carolina Legislative Activities
Senator Hamilton Horton, Jr. discussed current legislation (proposed, pending, and passed bills) and responded to questions from constituents.

Youth/Children with Special Needs

The Ronald McDonald House
Nancy Spaugh, Community Relations Coordinator for the Ronald McDonald House, told us about its services. The House serves families of children under 18 who are being treated at Brenner Children's Hospital/WFU Baptist Medical Center or Forsyth Medical Center and who reside outside of Forsyth County.

Founder Susan Crisp discussed the benefits of therapeutic horseback riding to the development of children with special needs.

Journalism In Our Community
Elva Sieg, wife of the late Tom Sieg (a well-known writer for the Winston-Salem Journal), discussed Mr. Sieg’s career in journalism and read excerpts from the book "Celebrating the Underdog." The book is a collection of Mr. Sieg's human-interest columns.

Ron Wachs, Ph.D., a therapist, told us about the services offered by CareNet including counseling for depression, stress, women’s issues, and more.

Erin Weeks of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Public Health Sciences discussed a grant that she has managed, which involved developing methods for primary care physicians to screen their patients for domestic violence.
